Thank you to parents/carers and pupils in Year 11 for joining Curriculum Leaders at the Year 11 Information Evening on Thursday – we hope the evening offered useful insight on how you can support your child in each of their subject areas in the run-up to the exams. Do get in touch if there is anything else we can provide you with.

The INSET day today has offered the opportunity for teachers and support staff to collaborate with colleagues in other local schools with a focus on curriculum development, SEND provision, subject specific pedagogy and the sharing of expertise. This work continues throughout the year as part of the Fareham and Gosport Collaboration.

We remind parents/carers that the Year 9 Subject Parents’ Evening will take place online on Tuesday 7 February 2023. A letter has already been sent to parents/carers on how to book an appointment with each of their child’s teachers. Booking is now open.

We also draw attention to parents/carers to the letter that has been sent to parents/carers today regarding the Industrial Action planned by the NEU for Wednesday 01 February 2023.

Year 10 GCSE Photography Enrichment Opportunities This Term

On Thursday 26 January, Year 10 pupils studying GCSE Photography met professional photographer Paul Gonella from the Strong Island Company for a photography walking workshop to Fareham Creek.  Paul shared many practical tips to help the pupils take incredible images from both smart phones and DSLR cameras.  We were blessed with glorious spring sunshine, friendly (!) swans and boundless enthusiasm from the group.  Well done to all pupils involved.  We can’t wait to see your edited images!

The group also got the opportunity to take part in a series of media-based workshops at Fareham College the previous week. The taster sessions involved a Photoshop based lesson, a coding lesson and a media production lesson where pupils had assigned roles for working the cameras, lighting and sound to create a short video. They directed, managed and performed their way through the short video and showed initiative, versatility and creativity.

Languages Assembly

The MFL department were extremely fortunate to be able to invite Mr David Binns, Director of Sanako, into school to give a presentation to our Year 9 pupils about the importance of modern foreign languages in the workplace.  Mr Binns explained his own personal experiences in business with humour and transparency. Our Year 9 pupils were able to ask him questions and were curious to know how often he spoke a language in his job and how much he had increased his salary by speaking a foreign language! We are grateful to Mr Binns for giving his time to visit us.

Citizenship Day

This week, pupils embarked on a journey about the legal system in Britain during this half term’s Citizenship Day. All year groups studied aspects of the courts, trials and the systems criminals are put through in the criminal justice system. Younger year groups studied the purpose of the law and its benefits, as well as their beliefs on how criminals should be treated. Elder year groups focused on how effective legal systems are in the UK.

Hampshire Cup Volleyball

The pupils below played their first game in the Hampshire Cup in volleyball this week.

Bishop Challoner, Basingstoke, took the first set. Cams Hill convincingly won the second set. In the third and final set, Bishop Challoner romped ahead, but the boys fought back to make a thrilling deciding set. A run of powerful serves from J Russell and super blocks from L Morton kept us in contention. Sadly, their experience rightly earned Bishop Challoner the win.

D Jones played defence superbly off the service, with H Tullett captaining and setting the team for some monstrous killed attacks. O Carter and S Furse defended well, with both proving a threat at the net on attack and blocking.

Next Wednesday we are due to host Bishop Challoner in the Year 9/10 Cup.
