Weekly Message – Issue 76

We were thrilled to be able to welcome back into school our Year 10 pupils this week.

Running alongside the home learning provision, all Year 10 pupils have been able to come into school for two hours of English and two hours of Maths delivered by the subject teachers. It was so lovely to see them and both pupils and teachers appreciated their time together very much.

Year 10 pupils were also able to come in and spend 2 hours with their teachers in Art, Photography, Child Development, Health and Social Care, Dance, Hospitality and Catering and Design Technology. In these subjects, pupils are underway or getting underway with pre-release exam board content and work that is assessed by the teacher ahead of the final exams next year. This is work that needs subject specific teacher input at the earliest possible opportunity.

We have assured parents/carers that if we could have pupils back in school in all subjects, we would, but that it is just not logistically possible with current Government guidance. We look forward to seeing our Year 10 pupils again next week.

Year 7 Transition

On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 July we would have thrown open our doors to our Year 7 Class of 2025, welcoming them into school on their induction days.

Sadly, this was not to be but living in our virtual world, we have been able to offer pupils a real flavour of life at Cams Hill School with a tour of the school, videos from subject areas, welcome videos from tutors, transition activities and challenges and two live question and answer sessions for pupils, parents and carers.

Accessed via our website, participants have been able to take part in our programme as and when it has been convenient to do so and can revisit the videos and activities time and time again.

We thank pupils, parents and carers for the really positive feedback and truly hope that we have been able to reassure our class of 2025 that they are joining a wonderful community that will work hard to ensure they feel settled and comfortable as soon as possible when they join in September.

Virtual Tutor Time

As part of our re-connection programme, tutors in Year 7 to 10 have hosted a virtual tutor time session this week with their tutor groups.

Every tutor has commented on how their session absolutely made their day, how wonderful it was to see the 26+ faces and how excited the pupils were to be together again as a group, quizzing, sharing experiences and just having fun.

Design and Technology – Rainbow Challenge

"" ""

It was wonderful to have so many entries for our D&T Rainbow Challenge which gave pupils and staff the opportunity to use their skills to ‘create a rainbow’ and show support for the NHS and all keyworker staff who are working hard during this difficult time. We were bowled over with the entries from both staff and pupils. They were all super creative and showcased a range of skills and mediums.

Well done and thank you all for taking part!

1st place: S Kent Year 8 Invincible

We were super impressed with this entry – the cake was well designed and demonstrated some excellent technical skills. We were particularly impressed with the layering of the coloured sponges and the precision of the decorative techniques used.

2nd place: L Cowdery Year 8 Warrior

We were impressed with the creativity behind this entry. An innovative design idea to create an arrangement from everyday household objects. The final outcome was very effective.

3rd place: M Whitewood Year 7 Endeavour

Design and Technology – Tunnock’s Teacake Challenge

"" ""

Design and Technology pupils were set various food styling tasks with one of them being to produce a plate which focused on the presentation of a Tunnock’s Teacake (or alternative representation of a teacake if people did not have these during lockdown).

We were looking for the most stunning plates created to enter for the national competition run through the ‘Food Teachers Centre’ Facebook page. The theme was “Seasons” or “Food styling techniques”.

Entries to the competition will be judged for creativity, presentation, skills and adding nutritional balance to the plate by the use of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients relevant to their design.

The pictures and descriptions have been uploaded into the competition and voting on them runs until 5 July 2020. This is a closed group of Food Teachers across the country who get one vote only in each category for their favourite dish. Miss Allen and Mrs Collins will be impartial when casting their votes, but we wish all our entries good luck.

All entries to our competitions are also being judged for our own Cams Hill Catering challenge and winners will be notified shortly when voting closes.

Design and Technology – Young Bakers

"" ""

On your marks, get set, bake! A special mention must go out to our young bakers.

These pupils have independently engaged with our subject via our D&T Instagram and in doing so created some stunning bakes. Pupils either used our recipes, old family favourites or hacked existing recipes to make their own mark. Well done and do keep baking 😉

Key Worker School

""

It’s been a breezy week at KWS so we’ve had to be inventive with our activities and stay warm and dry …

Yesterday, Mrs Skingley kept us busy with cryptic messages to decipher and communicate via semaphore flags… it was intense 😂
