At Cams Hill School we value all children as individuals with unique talents, skills and abilities. We are committed to supporting all children to do their best through academic, artistic and sporting achievements. We place especial emphasis on academic achievement because this is where we believe we can make the greatest contribution to the life of the child.

It is our aim to enable each emerging adult to take his or her place in society as an industrious, happy, self-motivated individual. It is our hope that each will contribute to the development of society and its improvement, demonstrate tolerance and respect for self and for the welfare of others, a positively questioning attitude, the ability to discriminate and the flexibility to adapt in a rapidly changing world. We are seeking to encourage and develop in all a sense of responsibility towards their work, to others and to themselves and the ability to exercise initiative and imagination to the benefit of the community.

QUALITY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

We reproduce here our policy statement setting out the standards we have set for the provision of Quality Teaching and Learning.

 Quality of Teaching

Where the quality of teaching is good:

  • lessons have clear aims and purposes which are shared by all
  • a wide range of teaching strategies appropriate to the objectives is employed
  • lessons are differentiated to cater for the learning of pupils of differing abilities and interests and to ensure the full participation of all
  • teaching approaches communicate clear, high expectations of pupils and set high, yet attainable, challenges
  • thorough planning, at all levels, ensures that pupils acquire knowledge, skills and understanding progressively
  • there is a realistic and appropriate pace to teaching and learning
  • appropriate use of exposition and effective questioning promotes thinking and facilitates understanding
  • there is regular feed-back to pupils within a framework of positive relationships
  • there is emphasis on praise, celebration of success and clear target setting
  • teacher intervention is well judged, ie pupils are not over-supervised nor left to their own devices

Quality of Learning

Where the quality of learning is good:

  • most pupils rise to the challenge of set tasks with good will and a sense of purpose and take pleasure in doing so
  • most pupils show that they are able to organise their own learning independently, as appropriate
  • pupils are accustomed to a variety of teaching and learning activities
  • most pupils are sufficiently confident to raise questions as appropriate
  • pupils evaluate their own work
  • pupils help each other as appropriate
