At Cams Hill we believe that homework
plays a valuable part in a pupil's education. Below are
answers to several frequently asked questions.
Why
is homework set at Cams Hill?
-
To
encourage independent study, self-discipline and effective
time management.
-
To
reinforce understanding, skills and processes learned in
the classroom.
-
To
involve parents and other adults in pupils’ work.
How
much homework should my son or daughter be doing?
-
Generally,
Year 7 pupils will have at least one hour's homework
a night. This will increase during Years 8
and 9 and in Years 10 and 11 the time may well be two
hours
or more
per night, but managed over a seven day period.
Your child
should not receive homework to be completed
the next day.
-
What
matters, of course, is that the work should be completed
and completed to the best of his/her ability in
the
time available.
Sometimes
it seems that my son or daughter has little or no homework,
yet at other times he or she has far too much!
-
The
demands of homework do vary, but a regular pattern
will emerge during
the year in response to the homework timetable.
-
Lower
school pupils usually receive specific dates to hand in homework.
The target date will depend on the subject
and the nature of the task set.
-
GCSE
Coursework makes heavy demands on pupils at certain times
during the course.
-
Pupils
must plan their homework schedules carefully to avoid overloading
at certain times. They should
not leave their
work until the last minute.
Homework must be handed in on time. Is all homework marked by the teachers?
-
It may seem that all homework should be marked by a teacher.
Certainly, all examination work or coursework will be carefully
marked, in line with the school marking policy. However,
there are times when work can be marked by the pupils themselves
and other times when only notes or preparation have been
set for homework and do not require marking.
How
will my child record his or her homework
and how can I check?
-
We
give all pupils a homework diary at the start
of each year. They are responsible for filling
it in accurately
with the subject, task and completion date.
-
It
is essential that you check and sign the
diary each week. Form tutors also check
the diaries weekly and will let you
know if there are any problems.
Sometimes
my child can't remember exactly what to do
and I can't understand what s/he has written
down.
What
happens if my child fails to do his
or her homework?
-
When
there is a genuine reason for homework
being late or
not done, (illness, holidays) pupils must discuss
this with their teacher and arrange
for the work to be completed
later, if required.
-
Sanctions
will be applied to those pupils who
do not do their homework
properly and punctually, without
good reason.
-
We
always let parents know if there are
frequent problems with their child's
homework.
What
sort of homework is set and how can
I help my child?
-
The
type of homework set will vary according
to the subject
and the age of the pupil.
-
You
can help by providing suitable conditions
for your child to study at home. Encourage
your child
to plan a homework
schedule. We also welcome your support with spelling
and grammar.
-
There
is a fine line between taking an interest
and interfering. It may take a little while for
you to
strike the right balance.
