At Cams Hill School we believe
that every person is equally important and that no one has
a right to harass, insult or cause offence to any other person
for any reason.
We particularly reject the way that some people abuse others,
because:
- of
their age,
- they
are richer or poorer, older or younger,
- of
their size,
- of
the colour of their skin,
- they
are male or female,
- they
are a teacher or a pupil,
- of
their religion/beliefs,
- of
handicap or personal problems,
- of
their looks or what they wear,
- of
their likes or dislikes,
- they
are popular or unpopular,
- of
their ability or lack of ability,
- of
nationality or accent,
- of
their cultural or ethnic roots.
We believe
that these principles underpin pupils’ behaviour
and all that we do as adults. If all of us use the guidelines
for good practice, use the praise and reward system wisely
and encourage pupils from the early stages to reasonable
behaviour, there will be far less need to resort to the section
on discipline and sanctions.
Concern for children and commitment to helping them are
necessary, but not sufficient conditions for success.
Everything
depends on good order; good classroom management makes
personal teaching possible. There is no doubt that some
children will try to drive the teacher, class supervisor
or adult helper to distraction. If they succeed, they will
have little or no respect for him or her and also despise
the very conditions they have helped to create. Most pupils
prefer good order and are happier if the classroom is under
control. One of the important things a school should offer
is freedom from the noise of others, interruptions and
restlessness.
Good order is not an end in itself, but we must never underestimate
its value as an enabler to the fulfilment of more important
aims.
