Year 7 Trip - Weald & Downlands Museum - Singleton

As the leaves fell in the beautiful West Sussex countryside this week, Year 7 visited the outstanding Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, near Chichester. Here they stepped back into the Middle Ages, walking in and around reconstructed houses and learning facts about their owners, construction and the village life that many people would have experienced.

Possibly the most evocative of all was Bayleaf Farmstead, whose smoky open hall once housed the rich Bailiff of the village, who "slept tight and didn't let the bed bugs bite" and had the use of en-suite facilities! Their daughter probably worked in the back room as a "spinster" and their servants ate "square meals" and drank from leather tankards. All would have observed the "curfew".

Even a beautiful autumn day could not disguise the gloomy, cramped existence that the poor residents of Hangleton Cottage up the hill must have experienced on a daily basis. Their diet of dry-cured fish impressed itself upon many Year 7 pupils, as did the home-made table, the top of which was at a 20 degree angle!

The experience of their visit of Singleton will form the basis of an assessment in forthcoming sessions where pupils will be designing information panels for several of the houses at the museum.

GERMAN EXCHANGE UPDATE

At 5am yesterday morning, twenty bleary-eyed Cams Hill pupils waved a sad farewell to their German Exchange partners.

During the week, they visited Bath, London, Fort Nelson and Winchester. According to rumours amongst the pupils, this was not all they got up to!

The first leg of the exchange has been a great success, with many strong friendships being forged. Both sets of pupils are now looking forward to our return trip in February 2009.

A full report and photos of the exchange will appear here in the next Bulletin.

URGENT - PUPILS NEEDED FOR SKI TRIP 2010

We have almost reached the total numbers required to make the 2010 Ski Trip to Les Deux Alpes in France. However, there are still not quite enough pupils signed up. Therefore, we are extending the deadline for deposits until the end of November to try and keep the trip viable.

It is a fantastic trip and it would be such a disappointment to the pupils already booked if it had to fold. Please raid the piggy bank!

If you are interested, please bring your
money into school by 28 November.

Please click here for more details of the 2010 Ski Trip To Les Deux Alpes

Support Us And Win
THE 200 CLUB

“The 200 Club” is a simple way for you to support the S&PA, and thereby the School.

You pay £1 per month (£12 per year) and are given your own number. We then draw two numbers every month. The first prize is £25 and the second is £15. Twice a year we do an extra draw when someone wins £100. Even if your number is drawn, it gets put straight back so you can win again and again!

It’s called “The 200 Club" because the ideal number of members is 200 – simple really! If we keep this number up we can raise a significant amount of money. This money is then allocated to various departments so that they can buy additional resources that the School would otherwise not be able to afford and thus enhance the teaching of our children.

The chances of winning are far greater than the National Lottery, so why not join today? Just fill in the application form and send it in, together with a cheque or a standing order mandate.

Please print off the form and return to Margaret King, 200 Club co-ordinator, at the School, care of the S&PA 200 Club. Thank you.
