FOREST FORGE - SHOUTING, STAMPING AND SINGING HOME

In the afternoon on Wednesday 8 October, the Forest Forge touring drama company, in conjunction with the Nuffield Theatre Southampton, brought their production "Stamping, Shouting and Singing Home" to our new Events Hall.

All of Year 9 and Performing Arts pupils from Year 10 and Year 11 were able to experience the power of this well focused and superbly executed presentation.

Through drama and song, the theme of Human Rights was sensitively explored as it highlighted the efforts of the Freedom Marchers and Civil Rights campaigners in America.

Seen through the eyes of a young girl, this was a joyful and moving celebration of freedom, featuring the sound of live gospel and spiritual music.

The use of an all female cast also provided a second theme of Women’s Rights.

Some of the comments at the end of the performance – "It made me cry" or "I never thought of it like that" clearly underlined the way in which live theatre can enrich and accelerate the learning process for us all.

Forest Forge will be returning in December with an evening performance of their very popular family show for Christmas. This year, it is "Jack and the Beanstalk". Tickets and further information will be available shortly.

NATIONAL ANTI BULLYING WEEK 17-21 NOVEMBER

National Anti Bullying Week was brought about to help raise awareness of different forms of bullying and to give pupils across the country the opportunity to think about and discuss a particular form of bullying. The national theme changes every year and the theme for this year is:

Racism – being different, belonging together

Although the School does not have a high percentage of bullying, for the last few years I have arranged various tasks for the pupils to do during October and November in order to bring awareness of the national theme. I plan different events for each year group and give them the opportunity to share their work through Assemblies during Anti Bullying Week.

One of the many events for this year was for ChildLine to come into School on Wednesday 8 October to train a number of pupils on presentation skills. During the afternoon, outside agencies were invited into School to help pupils put together a 5 minute presentation on one of 7 topics. Each topic had three or four pupils working on it and the topics they choose from were:

      • Racism
      • Keeping Safe
      • Peer Pressure
      • Online Safety
      • Drugs/Alcohol/Smoking
      • Sexual Relationships
      • General Bullying

The event not only gave pupils the chance to learn a new skill, but also to share their knowledge of one form of bullying with their peers by showing their presentation during Tutor Times before, during and after Anti Bullying Week. I will also be writing to our colleagues in the curriculm linked Primary Schools to see if they are interested in watching any of the presentations in the coming weeks.

This is what some of the pupils had to say about their day:

'It was great fun' - Charlie
'I liked the role play' - Jack
'It was great fun. Jan and Judith from ChildLine were really nice and helpful and so were all the other people who came in. Thank you' - Erika
'I enjoyed it' - Josh
'The best bit was putting our presentation together' - Daniella
'I really enjoyed it because it got everyone involved and we were taught a lot' - Rachel

All the pupils and agencies who took part enjoyed their day and I would like to thank them all for making the day so successful.

DRAMA SHOES OF THE WEEK

Many thanks to the parents and children who have trawled Fareham and beyond for sensibly priced, indoor shoes appropriate for the different surfaces in Drama. Many pupils have discovered the opportunities for sensible personalisation which may be presented here so we would like to encourage and celebrate this diversity with a regular ‘feeture’!

This week, we feature shoes from Year 7 and Year 9.

Many different styles of indoor, non slip shoes are acceptable for Drama. Some pupils have even personalised their footwear.

Here are a few examples:

THE 200 CLUB

“The 200 Club” is a simple way for you to support the S&PA, and thereby the School.

You pay £1 per month (£12 per year) and are given your own number. We then draw two numbers every month. The first prize is £25 and the second is £15. Twice a year we do an extra draw when someone wins £100. Even if your number is drawn, it gets put straight back so you can win again and again!

It’s called “The 200 Club" because the ideal number of members is 200 – simple really! If we keep this number up we can raise a significant amount of money. This money is then allocated to various departments so that they can buy additional resources that the School would otherwise not be able to afford and thus enhance the teaching of our children.

The chances of winning are far greater than the National Lottery, so why not join today? Just fill in the application form and send it in, together with a cheque or a standing order mandate.

Please print off the form and return to Margaret King, 200 Club co-ordinator, at the School, care of the S&PA 200 Club. Thank you.
