BATH LANE MURAL

The Year 10 BTEC Art Group has been collaborating with Fareham Borough Council in the design work for a wall mural in the underpass beneath the A27 at Bath Lane in Fareham.

The work has now been completed and, on Monday 3 November, Cams Hill pupils Christina Lock, Enya Boyes and Annie Xuereb went along to see the finished result. They were accompanied by Miss Matthews and Mrs Warman.

The subway has been given a water and waterways-themed makeover from its dingy, drab and grimy state thanks to bright and cheerful designs by pupils at Cams Hill School, Harrison Primary School and Wykeham House School.

The pupils were all invited to think about murals by Fareham Borough Councillor Mrs Katrina Trott who was also present to congratulate the pupils on their hard work and also give each school £20 to spend in its Art Department.

Christina Lock said: 'We were already doing a project on fish and we had a trip to Blue Reef Aquarium in Southsea, so we took our inspiration from that. I think it has really brightened it up.'

The scheme was painted by Hampshire County Council contractors, Remchem, to the designs provided by the pupils and the hope is that people might respect the area a bit more now.

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR BROUGHT TO LIFE FOR YEAR 8

On Wednesday, Year 8 journeyed back to the 17th Century with a visit from the The History Squad, a well established historical interpretation company, dedicated to bringing history to life through dramatic presentations.

It is easy to assume that history is purely about important dates and key people and it is often hard for us in the 21st Century to truly relate to past events, but the History Squad, through its principal, Kevin Hicks, demonstrated that it is about much more.

Real people, just like us, and possibly our distant relations, were caught up in the turmoil of ‘the Rebellion’ and suffered incomprehensibly in the process of forging our history.

The skilful acting and use of costume and authentic weaponry really enabled pupils to see, hear, touch and even, following the loud boom of the muskets, smell, our shared heritage.

Mr D Whineray, History Teacher

“In Year 8 we have been studying the Civil War, as part of our education we had a History Day. We learnt about the uniform, weapons and people themselves. Many people got dressed up as the men in the Civil War. We had a firearm display in a spectacular finish.”

GERMAN EXCHANGE

On October 16, twenty German pupils from the Friedrich-Spee-Gymnasium, in Rüthen (North Rhine-Westphalia), came to England to stay with pupils from Cams Hill School.

After a very enjoyable week, we wished our German Exchange partners a fond farewell on Thursday of the last week of half-term.

The first leg of the Exchange was a roaring success. We are all looking forward to the return leg in February 2009. Below are some comments from the pupils.

Mr B Ewers, Head of Modern Languages

"Many of us were anxious to meet our exchange student and, at the same time, realised that the nerves running through them were probably worse.

The weekend gave each of us the chance to spoil our German friends rotten; some of us spent the day at Southsea or Portsmouth to visit the historic sights, or had the opportunity to go bowling. By the end of this, we had already seen stronger friendships. In spite of what each of us chose, it gave the German students an excellent insight into our family way of life and experience the culture and local attractions that we take for granted in the South – differing enormously in Rüthen.

Throughout the week, we began to realise how much we were helping our friend’s English all day long, without making a real effort, and felt scared as to how much more they were picking up and starting to understand!

I believe there was a certain amount of tears as the coach drove away and many of us were already looking forward to next year’s visit to Germany (Wir freuen uns auf Deutschland!)"
Matthew Burnett 10H

"England has been a great experience to me. At first I was very scared, but soon I felt at home. My host family was very nice and they said that I can come every time again.

The trips were very good, because we saw a lot of England. But I think we could have spent more time in school, because I was very interested to find out how the schools in England work. Especially the trip to London was brilliant, because we saw a lot of the capital of England, like Buckingham Palace and the London Eye.

I'm looking forward to February, when our exchange partners will come to Germany." Carolin Bitter (Friedrich-Spee)

"I think it’s really good that our school makes exchanges to different countries, also to England. It was awesome to be there and to get to know all the English people. All in all it was a wonderful experience to see England and the people there. I also look forward to seeing my exchange partner and the other ones again." Lea Mühlenschulte ( Friedrich-Spee)

"I really enjoyed the time in England. The weekend with my family was great and I loved the trip to London." Patricia Will (Friedrich-Spee)

"They came to get a taste of English life and see what English teenagers did every day. Most of the pupils looked a little nervous as they stepped off the coach, but they were all cold; apparently it is warmer in Rüthen than Fareham!

On Friday 17, the pupils and their teachers went to Winchester and visited the ancient sites. They visited the Cathedral and King Arthur’s Round Table, and all the other interesting buildings. They came home with lots of photos in their cameras and they were very tired.

Over the weekend, they spent time with their family at home. We took them to lots of different attractions - the fun fair, the shopping mall, Portsmouth, the Spinnaker Tower and our normal hobbies or clubs.

I enjoyed this trip because it was a great experience and I don’t normally get to meet someone with a different culture and make friends with them so quickly. I hope to keep in touch with Lisa by email and I can’t wait until we go to Rüthen in February!" Alice Frampton 9L
YEAR 10 GCSE TEXTILES

The photographs show the first piece of practical work recently completed by members of the Year 10 GCSE Textiles Class. The subject was Hessian Books.

Pupils were focusing on improving their machining skills, developing their creativity and meeting a deadline for completing their work.

The standard of finished products is very high and a pleasure to mark.

Mrs A Waters, Textiles Teacher

DRAMA SHOES OF THE WEEK

Many thanks to the parents and children who have trawled Fareham and beyond for sensibly priced, indoor shoes appropriate for the different surfaces in Drama. Many pupils have discovered the opportunities for sensible personalisation which may be presented here so we would like to encourage and celebrate this diversity with a regular ‘feeture’! Many different styles of indoor, non-slip shoes are acceptable for Drama. Some pupils have even personalised their footwear.

FREE BOOK SCHEME

All pupils in Year 7 will this week be receiving a free book as part of the Booked Up Programme. This is a national programme, organised by Booktrust and supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Its aim is to encourage and support reading for pleasure and the programme was officially launched last year by Michael Rosen, the Children's Laureate. We are one of thousands of schools that have chosen to take part and benefitfrom this excellent initiative.

The children ordered their choice at the beginning of term, from 12 specially selected titles and there was some excitement when they finally arrived in the Library this week!

EVENING CONCERT

On Tuesday evening, the Music Department held an Evening Concert that saw instrumentalists and vocalists of all standards perform.

The range of pieces that were played was excellent, varying from classical piano all the way through to popular song.

Some of the highlights included Hannah Lucket's rendition of "The Black Horse & the Cherry Tree", Rachel Graves' piano performance and Jonathan Wan's violin piece.

All performers showed that they had been working hard for the event and I am pleased that so many could take part.

Mr S Lawrenson, Head of Music

YEAR 7 RUGBY

On Tuesday 4 November, the Year 7 Rugby Team played their first two league games of the season.  For forty minutes they passed fluidly, tackled hard and demonstrated a superb team spirit.  All this was reflected in two solid wins, 25-0 and 15-0, against Horndean and Purbrook respectively.  We would like to congratulate all the boys on making a fantastic start to the season.

Remembrance has been the theme of Year Group Assemblies this week run by Headteacher, Mr Wilmot. The presentation will continue on Monday and Tuesday next week.

In addition to raising money from the Non Uniform Day for this year's Poppy Appeal, we have been encouraging pupils and staff to show support for this year's appeal by buying a poppy and getting involved.

Last year, the Inter-Year Competition was won by the pupils in Year 9 and overall Cams Hill School raised a grand total of £355.

We hope to at least match that amount this year.

The Staff and Parents' Association have organised
a coach trip to London on Saturday 22 November.

There are only 7 seats left which need to be filled!

The cost is £15 a head and the coach will leave Cams School at 8am.

We will be leaving London at 6pm for the return journey.

This is real value for money, so if you are interested in spending some time in London to do whatever you want, give Ellie Stokell a call on 01329 231641 to reserve your seat.

THE 200 CLUB

“The 200 Club” is a simple way for you to support the S&PA, and thereby the School.

You pay £1 per month (£12 per year) and are given your own number. We then draw two numbers every month. The first prize is £25 and the second is £15. Twice a year we do an extra draw when someone wins £100. Even if your number is drawn, it gets put straight back so you can win again and again!

It’s called “The 200 Club" because the ideal number of members is 200 – simple really! If we keep this number up we can raise a significant amount of money. This money is then allocated to various departments so that they can buy additional resources that the School would otherwise not be able to afford and thus enhance the teaching of our children.

The chances of winning are far greater than the National Lottery, so why not join today? Just fill in the application form and send it in, together with a cheque or a standing order mandate.

Please print off the form and return to Margaret King, 200 Club co-ordinator, at the School, care of the S&PA 200 Club. Thank you.
